National Adoption Day
Family Celebration and Adoption Fair
Saturday, November 15, 2008
10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Granite Park - Sacramento
Sacramento, CA – November 5, 2008 - Sierra Adoption Services, Asprianet Family Services, Families First, Lilliput Children’s Services and Sacramento Department of Health and Human Services – Children’s Protective Services have joined together to raise adoption awareness by hosting a free adoption fair and family celebration on Saturday, November 15, 2008 - National Adoption Day 2008.
November is National Adoption month and throughout the month all across the country there will be events and activities celebrating adoption. On Saturday, November 15, courthouses across the nation will voluntarily open and on this day, thousands of adoptions will be finalized.
In Sacramento area, the judicial staff at William H. Ridgeway Family Courthouse will voluntarily open its’ doors and hearts as over 50 children will find permanence through adoption. “This is a wonderful day for families and a truly important day for our community.” said Bob Herne, Executive Director of Sierra Adoption Services.
In addition to the great number of adoptions happening on the day, there will be a truly fun family-style event at Granite Park located directly behind the William H. Ridgeway Courthouse. Free activities include magicians, face-painting, balloon artists, kid’s games & crafts, live music with Music Mike, cultural entertainment and more.
During the family celebration, hundreds of children and adoptive families will come together to celebrate with the newly finalized families as well as celebrate THEIR adoption community. “We would love to see families connect with one another, for their children to meet other adopted children and to hopefully create a sense of connectedness.” shared Bob Herne.
To build a strong collaboration among local organizations, many adoption agencies, foster family agencies, and children organizations will have information booths at the event, providing the general public a venue to discover more about local adoption and the programs available to prospective adoptive families in the Sacramento area.
There will be opportunities for interviews and photos with community leaders, speakers and designated families.

Sierra Adoption Services (SAS) has been profoundly committed to their mission to transform the lives of children in foster care.
“At Sierra Adoption Services, we believe that every child deserves a loving, stable family to help them develop into strong adults,” said SAS Executive Director Bob Herne. “We are passionate about helping children to find families, and throughout the last 25 years, we are proud to have made an impact on the lives of nearly 2,000 children in our community.”
Throughout its history, Sierra Adoption Services has worked with so many wonderful families, volunteers, donors and community leaders who all share the same passion and concern for the children.
“Without the support of the community and our partners, our work would be tremendously difficult, if not impossible, and we are eternally grateful for their support,” said Development and Public Relations Officer Bobby Cobbs.
The creation of a “Then & Now” family retrospective has allowed the agency to reconnect with many families from the past 25 years, and the stories that are being shared truly communicate the powerful impact that adoption has on the lives of children. Stories are available to be shared with the community, and can be requested through Sierra Adoption Services’ office of development and public relations.
